Clean water and a working heater in January come down to a few simple habits.
Sanitiser: chlorine or bromine
- Chlorine granules are the cheapest and most common choice. They work fast but smell more.
- Bromine works better at hot tub temperatures and smells less, but costs more.
Test the water every couple of days with test strips and keep the pH between about 7.2 and 7.6. Follow the dose on the product you buy.
Filters
Rinse the filter cartridge every few days of use and replace it when it stays grey after rinsing. A clogged filter strains the pump and can trip the heater.
Changing the water
Most owners drain and refill every one to three months, depending on how often the tub is used. A UVC sanitiser (like on the MSpa Tribeca and Denver) helps keep water clear between changes.
Hard water
In limescale areas, scale builds up on the heater element. Some Intex tubs have a hard water system built in. Otherwise use a scale inhibitor.
Winter use
- Keep the water at a steady temperature rather than switching off and on.
- Look for a FrostFree or freeze-protect mode, which runs the heater when the water nears freezing. Wave Spas tubs have one.
- Keep the lid on and strapped. Clear snow off it so it does not sag.
- If you will not use the tub for weeks, drain it fully, dry it and store inflatables indoors.
